Foam fire extinguisher: used for which fires?
A foam fire extinguisher (AFFF) is used for Class B fires in petrol, diesel, oil and paint, and for Class A fires in wood, paper and cloth. The foam forms a blanket over the burning surface that cuts off air, cools the fuel and stops it from reigniting.
It is not for electrical fires. For panels and live equipment, choose a CO2 fire extinguisher instead.
Where to use foam, and which size
Typical sites for a foam unit:
- Fuel stations and fuel storage: pump islands, tank areas and tanker bays.
- Garages and workshops: where oil, grease and solvents are handled.
- Generator areas: DG sets with diesel tanks.
- Factories and warehouses: paint shops, chemical stores and packing areas.
- Refineries and large industrial sites: open areas with big liquid fuel risks.
Choose the portable foam fire extinguisher in 6 L or 9 L for garages, workshops, DG rooms and fuel islands. For large fuel risks, choose the foam wheeled trolley in 25 L, 50 L or 100 L. It carries far more foam and is moved on wheels to the fire.
Many sites keep both: portable units at each risk and a trolley at the main fuel store. Placement should be planned as per IS 2190 so a unit is always within reach.
