What is a fire bucket used for?
A fire bucket is a red bucket kept filled with dry sand or water, ready for the first minutes of a fire. It is one of the oldest and simplest fire safety tools. It needs no power, no pressure and no refill, and it is still standard at factories, construction sites, petrol pumps, godowns and workshops.
Fill it with dry sand to smother small oil and fuel spills and to stop a burning liquid from spreading. Fill it with water for Class A fires in wood, paper, cloth and cardboard. Never throw water on oil, fuel or electrical fires.
Fire bucket stand, with or without canopy
Buckets work best on a stand, kept together, visible and easy to lift off. We offer three options:
- Fire bucket: the red bucket on its own, for sand or water.
- Fire bucket stand: holds 2, 4 or 6 buckets, for indoor areas and sheds.
- Stand with canopy: for 2, 4 or 6 buckets, with a roof that keeps rain and dust out so the sand or water stays clean outdoors.
Choose the canopy stand for open yards, fuel areas, construction sites and rooftops. Choose the plain stand for covered workshops, stores and sheds.
Where to place a fire bucket and how many
Place bucket stands near the risk but not in its path: beside fuel storage, generator sets, welding bays and loading areas. Keep them near exits so a person can grab a bucket and still move away from the fire.
Train staff to throw sand from the side, low and at the base of the flames, and to raise the alarm before trying to tackle a fire. A 2-bucket stand suits a small workshop or shop. A 4 or 6-bucket stand suits factories, petrol pumps and larger sites. Check the buckets regularly, top up water, and keep sand dry and loose.
A bucket supports, but does not replace, a fire extinguisher. Most sites keep both. For powder units suited to mixed risks, see our ABC fire extinguisher range.
