Fire extinguisher gas: CO2 or clean agent?

Gas-type fire extinguishers put out fires without water or powder, so they are ideal where equipment must not be damaged. The two common choices are CO2 and clean agent gas.

CO2 gas fire extinguisher

Carbon dioxide displaces oxygen and cools the fire. It is safe on live electrical equipment and leaves no residue. Best for meter rooms, DG sets and electrical panels. It is less effective outdoors or on paper, wood and cloth.

Clean agent gas fire extinguisher

A clean agent evaporates completely, works on Class A, B and C fires and is safe on electronics. Best for server rooms, control rooms, labs and offices with expensive equipment. Automatic clean agent modular units protect unmanned rooms.

Which gas extinguisher should you buy?

  • Electrical panel or meter room: CO2 4.5 kg.
  • Server room, UPS, office electronics: clean agent 2–4 kg, or a modular unit on the ceiling.
  • Mixed office floor: ABC for general areas plus a gas unit near the panels.

Placement tips for gas extinguishers

Mount the unit outside or just inside the door of the room it protects, so you never have to walk past the fire to reach it. Keep it 1–1.5 m above the floor, clearly visible and unblocked. For unmanned rooms, an automatic clean agent modular unit on the ceiling works even when nobody is there.

All questions
Which gas is used in fire extinguishers?

Mainly carbon dioxide (CO2) and clean agent gases. Each suits different risks; both are safe on live electrical equipment.

Is fire extinguisher gas harmful?

In a closed small room CO2 lowers oxygen, so leave the room after use and ventilate. Clean agents are designed for occupied spaces when used as directed.

Is a gas extinguisher better than ABC powder?

Not better, just different. Gas leaves no residue and protects equipment; ABC powder covers more fire types at a lower price.
