Small fire extinguishers (1–4 kg)
- Car: a compact car fire extinguisher under the seat or in the boot.
- Kitchen: 1–2 kg ABC near the exit, or a K-type for oil.
- Flat or shop: 4 kg ABC near the main board.
- EV or e-bike: a lithium battery extinguisher.
Larger portable units (6–9 kg)
For office floors, lobbies, staircases and factory bays, 6 kg and 9 kg ABC units cover more area per unit. They are still portable, with a carry handle and hose.
How to use a portable extinguisher (PASS)
- Pull the safety pin.
- Aim at the base of the fire.
- Squeeze the handle.
- Sweep side to side.

Where to keep a portable fire extinguisher
Keep it near an exit, on the escape route, clearly visible and easy to lift off its bracket, about 1–1.5 m above the floor. In a car, fix it in a bracket so it cannot roll. Check the gauge once a month: the needle should be in the green.

What is the best small fire extinguisher?
For most homes, shops and cars, a 1–2 kg ABC unit is the best all-round small fire extinguisher.
How heavy is a portable fire extinguisher?
The agent weight is on the label (for example 2 kg or 6 kg); the full unit weighs a little more because of the cylinder.
